This release provides data relating to new HIV diagnoses reported to HPS by NHS Scotland laboratories for the period 1 April to 30 June 2019.
The number of new diagnoses includes:
- first ever HIV diagnoses
- diagnoses previously recorded elsewhere, but newly reported in Scotland during this period
- the cohort of individuals diagnosed and living with HIV in Scotland at 30 June 2019
From January to June 2019, 184 reports of HIV diagnoses were recorded in Scotland; 96 first ever HIV diagnoses and 88 diagnoses which were known to have been recorded previously outwith Scotland.
Of the 184 HIV diagnoses recorded during this period, 38% were among men who have sex with men (MSM), 23% were associated with sexual intercourse between men and women, and 8% were among people who inject drugs (PWID).
Allowing for the migration of an estimated 1,554 HIV-positive individuals, those who have not attended HIV specialist services for more than ten years and those who have died, 5,484 infected individuals are estimated to be living in Scotland at 30 June 2019.
